Installation of exhaust fans is necessary to maintain visibility above the critical level in the staircase. It was noticed that natural ventilation may not be sufficient to extract all the smoke produced in the event of a fire. To study the worst case, elevators and sprinklers are assumed to be inactive. A case study is presented for a fire accident on the second floor of a twenty-story high-rise building. Physics-based models have been used for finding out the effectiveness of exhaust fans for smoke extraction. The findings highlight the importance of considering wind in large-scale façade fire tests.Įffective smoke extraction strategy for a model high-rise building fire is developed using large eddy simulation method in fire dynamics simulator (FDS). It has been shown that wind speed and wind direction have an impact on temperature variation and fire spread. After the validation, the effect of wind speed and direction was assessed through numerical modelling. Measured wind speed and wind direction during the experiment were fed into the model and the thermocouple results from the model were validated with the experimental results. It consisted of two façade materials: an aluminium composite panel with a combustible polyethylene core and a completely non-combustible aluminium panel. Wind speed was measured at a height of 10 m. The experimental setup was 18 m tall, and thermocouples were placed at 10.5 m, 13.5 m, and 16.5 m heights to record the temperature. FDS is a Computational Fluid Dynamics Software (CFD) for fire-driven fluid flows. In this study, a large-scale façade fire test that was carried out at a fire test facility in Melbourne was numerically modelled using the software Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). However, these tests and the other building standards regarding façade fire, do not take the effect of wind into account. Critical aspects as the combustibility of the materials, and further studies on façade performance in fire are also highlighted.Ĭombustible façades pose a great risk to the buildings and their occupants in fire situations. Test methods that can be used to predict the flame and smoke spread are introduced and compared comprehensively. The influence of cladding material, geometry of the façade, cavities, wind and space between buildings are also discussed. The paper provides the first comprehensive review of current international design guidelines and test methods involving fire resistive design of facades. The latest incident at Grenfell tower demonstrated how vulnerable modern facades may be to fires, and emphasised how this vulnerability directly affects the safety of building occupants. These changes fundamentally alter the behaviour of modern façades in fire and pose a risk to building safety and economic loss in the event of a fire. There has been a significant improvement in façade design to ensure excellent building performance in terms of energy efficiency and requirements on aesthetic appeal. ![]() Building façades are considered as one of the critical elements of a buildings especially in case of fire where poor performance of façades lead to severe fire spread and building damage including human loss.
